Background

SIS-Biostatistics and Data Management unit at WHO/RHR supports data management needs of approximately 20 multicenter multi-country research studies which are at varying stages of development and implementation. Most of these studies are managed by the SIS unit internally and some are outsourced. A TOR was established for a company or institution who was to provide data management services for a research study to be implemented in Guinea, Somalia, and Kenya. The study was a cluster randomized controlled trial that aimed to study the effect of a health system strengthening intervention package on provision of FGM services as well as the impact of a person-centered communication training for prevention of female genital mutilation (FGM) was carried out in antenatal clinics in primary health centers in three countries. In each country, quantitative data was collected at 60 health facilities (30 intervention and 30 control sites), with 60 ANC providers and 600 first visit ANC clients. A process evaluation was also carried out to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the interventions. The research team in each country included 25-30 data collectors who collected data on tablets. The quantitative data included three short questionnaires (11, 13, and 18 questions) and 1 long questionnaire (50 questions) that were administered via the trained interviewers using tablets in each country. These questionnaires were administered at three-time points (baseline, three months and 6 months) for intervention arm and two times for control arm (at months 0 and 6).
